Everything you need to know about the Australian Labradoodle

You’ve seen them around town — walking beside their owners, turning heads everywhere they go.

They’re adorable, irresistibly fluffy, and often as charming as a real-life teddy bear. They sit politely, greet people warmly, and carry themselves with that unmistakable doodle confidence.

It’s hard not to fall in love on sight.

So naturally, you’re wondering: Is a doodle — or even better, an Australian Labradoodle — the right dog for you?
But an equally important question is: Are you the right match for an Australian Labradoodle?

These dogs are more than just cute faces; they’re smart, social, energetic, and deeply connected to their families. Understanding what they need — and what you can offer — is the first step to knowing whether this exceptional breed is the perfect fit for your home and lifestyle.

The Australian Labradoodle isn’t just a mix—it’s a thoughtfully developed breed with a purpose.

Over 25 years ago, a blind couple in need of a hypoallergenic guide dog inspired the creation of this incredible breed. What followed was a dedicated breeding program focused on health, temperament, and allergy-friendly coats.

 Purposeful Breed Development

Unlike first-generation Labradoodles, the Australian Labradoodle was created

using a combination of carefully selected breeds:

  • Labrador Retriever

  • Poodle

  • American Cocker Spaniel

  • English Cocker Spaniel

  • Irish Water Spaniel

  • Curly Coated Retriever

This blend aimed to produce a calm, intelligent, low-allergy dog suitable for service and companionship.

Once the right traits were consistently passed on, multigenerational breeding began—meaning today’s Australian Labradoodles are bred only with other Australian Labradoodles for greater consistency.

 Temperament & Traits

Australian Labradoodles are known for being:

  • Even-tempered and gentle

  • Highly trainable and eager to please

  • Affectionate and loyal

  • Playful and great with families

  • Hypoallergenic and low-shedding

Sizes to Suit Every Family

Australian Labradoodles come in three sizes:

  • Miniature – Small and portable

  • Medium – Great for most households- Didgeridoodles breed

  • Standard – Larger, loving companions

Grooming

Because of their luxurious coat, this breed is undeniably high-maintenance.

Daily combing is essential to prevent matting, along with a professional bath and blowout about once a month.

Haircuts are typically needed every three to four months to keep them comfortable and looking their best.

Frequent grooming can become costly, and consistent at-home care is a must.

For families on a tight budget or those unwilling to commit to regular brushing, this may not be the ideal breed choice.

Proper coat care is non-negotiable — and absolutely necessary to keep this dog healthy and happy.

Trainability

Exceptionally intelligent and eager to please, the Australian Labradoodle picks up new skills with remarkable speed.

This makes training both fun and rewarding — but it also means that unwanted habits can develop just as quickly

if guidance is lacking.

Families without the time or interest to train will soon discover that this bouncy,

energetic breed can be part kangaroo, and no one enjoys being jumped on.

Starting obedience training from day one is essential.

Without it, “Come, come, come!” may become the most common phrase in your household.

Proper training ensures your Australian Labradoodle grows into the polite, well-mannered companion they’re meant to be.

Why Choose an Australian Labradoodle?

Compared to standard Labradoodles, the Australian variety offers:

  1. Consistent hypoallergenic, non-shedding coats

  2. Calmer, more predictable personalities

  3. Proven service and therapy dog traits

  4. Reliable sizing (Mini, Medium, Standard)

  5. A distinctive and charming appearance

Barking Level

Barks when necessary.

This dog is no attack dog!

It will not protect your family or your home but it can sound big when they want to.

If someone tried to break into your home they would surely be licked to death!

The Australian Labradoodle may bark a lot if not well exercised or if under socialized.

Activity Level

This breed thrives with families who enjoy being active and involving their dog in daily life. Regular walks, playtime, and engaging activities help keep them happy, healthy, and well-behaved.

Leaving this dog alone in the garden is a recipe for trouble — they’ll always find their own entertainment.

If they’re not digging up your flowerbeds, they may be barking at birds or chasing shadows.

Consistent interaction and mental stimulation are key to ensuring this energetic breed stays content.

Am I right for the breed?

This companion-oriented breed thrives on constant human interaction and being an active part of its family’s daily life.

They do not do well in homes where they’re left alone for long periods — this dog truly wants to be by your side.

Playful, social, and always ready to entertain, they adore meeting new people and treat every stranger like a long-lost friend.

Early socialization is essential to help them grow into a confident, well-rounded adult.

Because of their deep attachment to their humans, this breed is not suited for families who are away for extended hours.

Australian Labradoodle

vs Other Doodle Breeds

Choosing the right dog for your family is important. Here’s how the Australian Labradoodle compares to a few other popular Poodle crosses:

Cockapoo vs

Australian Labradoodle

Cockapoos (Cocker Spaniel × Poodle) are a popular choice in the UK and are similar in size to medium Australian Labradoodles. They’re lively, fun, and often full of energy—sometimes bordering on "a little crazy."

Training success can vary widely between individuals,

and because they’re an early-generation cross,

their coat types also vary—from shedding to woolly,

non-shedding coats.

While medium Australian Labradoodles and F1 Cockapoos

can look similar at first glance,

there are key differences:

  • More consistent temperament and coat in Australian Labradoodles

  • Less poodle-like face and slightly longer legs

  • Generally calmer and more trainable than Cockapoos

Cavapoo vs

Australian Labradoodle

Cavapoos (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel × Poodle) a

re typically smaller

and a bit calmer than Cockapoos due to the

Cavalier’s gentle nature.

However, like other first-generation crosses, their coats can still vary and some will shed.

While Cavapoos can make sweet companions, they are more prone to inherited health issues, especially from the Cavalier side.

Australian Labradoodles, with their carefully managed multigenerational breeding, are generally healthier, more consistent, and allergy-friendly.

Goldendoodle vs

Australian Labradoodle

Goldendoodles (Golden Retriever × Poodle) are larger in size

and tend to be friendly and calm.

However, they often have less predictable coats—some will shed—

and their size can be a lot for smaller homes.

Australian Labradoodles offer:

  • Smaller size options (mini, medium, standard)

  • More consistent non-shedding coats

  • Multigenerational predictability in temperament, coat, and health

If you're looking for a calm, trainable, allergy-friendly dog

with a consistent look and temperament, the Australian Labradoodle is hard to beat.

Our passion is raising exceptional dogs with intention, integrity, and an abundance of love. Every decision we make centers around the health, temperament, and lifelong wellbeing of our dogs and the families who welcome them.

From day three of life, each puppy begins Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) and Early Scent Introduction (ESI). These proven developmental practices help shape confident, resilient, and adaptable dogs who are ready to take on the world with curiosity and ease.

But our work doesn’t stop there. We invest deeply in early socialization, structured enrichment,

and thoughtful exposure to everyday life. By the time our pups are ready for their new homes,

they’ve already built a strong foundation for success.

We believe that matching the right puppy to the right family is essential. That’s why each placement is based on temperament, lifestyle, and the unique needs of both the pup and the humans — never just appearance.
